The USB Standards List

There have been several significant USB standards, with USB4 2.0 being the most recent version:

USB4 2.0: This version of USB 4 was introduced in September 2022 and supported 80 Gbps (81,920 Mbps).

USB4: Founded on the Thunderbolt 3 specification, USB4 ropes 40 Gbps (40,960 Mbps).

USB 3.2 Gen 2×2: Also mentioned as USB 3.2, devices that obey its specifications may transfer data at 20 Gbps (20,480 Mbps) or Superspeed+ USB dual-lane.

USB 3.2 Gen 2: Former as USB 3.1, compatible devices can direct and obtain information at 10 Gbps (10,240 Mbps), otherwise “Superspeed+.”

[USB] 3.2 Gen 1: Before being called USB 3.0, acquiescent hardware can reach a maximum broadcast rate of 5 Gbps (5,120 Mbps), called SuperSpeed USB.

USB 2.0: High-Speed USB, or USB 2.0-compliant devices, have a maximum transmission speed of 480 Mbps.

USB 1.1: Also known as Full Speed USB, USB 1.1 devices have a maximum transfer speed of 12 Mbps.

Most USB cables and devices are still USB 2.0 compatible, while more and more are moving to USB 3.0.

How fast is USB 3.2 compared to USB-C?

USB Type-C and USB 3.1, USB 3.2, USB4 and USB4 V2. Both USB Type-A and USB Type-C connector use to facilitate 5 Gbps and 10 Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen 1 and Gen 2) connection, and USB Type-C also used to reduce 20 Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen 2×2), 40 Gbps (USB4), and 80 Gbps (USB4 V2) connections.

USB-C 1 connector

USB-C 1 connector

A USB-C connector has four pair of metal pin functioning as “lanes” transfer and receive data. USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbp) and USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbp) use one TX lane (transmit) and one RX lane (receive), base on positioning of connector. USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 take advantage of all four lane to achieve up to theoretical 20Gbps transfer rate.

Transfer speed

USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20 Gbps) 2X faster it predecessor, USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps).

Figure 1 show transfer rate test result for different types of data transfer. The drive tested XS2000 2TB portable SSD drive from Kingston.

An increasing number of host device with USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 support released and XS2000 aims to leverage these host with its USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 controller.
